The internet is a wonderful pastime for people all over the world to participate in.  People can do all sorts of activities online but by far one of the most popular and exciting online activities involves that of the Online Auction.  The reason why online auctions are so popular are because they involve competition and two things that people love to do: shop till they drop and sell their wares to make money.  The internet is the biggest market around and there are endless opportunities for buyers and sellers to participate.

How do you get involved in online auctions you ask?  Well the first step is to pick an auction site such as Ebay, Yahoo or Amazon.  Once you do that, each site will give you step by step instructions on how to register.  The best part of these auction sites is that they are completely free to register.  Once registered each site will have a different section in which you can buy or sell different items which are put in an endless number of categories.  There are different things that you need to know in the case of buying and selling different items. 

If you are interested in buying a particular item in an auction you will need to bid on it.  Once you find the item you may be interested in, there are some things that you need to know before bidding.  It is a good idea to read the full item description to determine if it is exactly what you want.  This is because the description will tell you whether the item is new or used, has any defects and will offer a brand name if that is important to you.  If you are unsure about the item, each site will allow you to contact the seller by e-mail to ask questions.  Once you have checked the description, you want to find out how much the seller is charging for shipping and handling.  If the seller is charging a high shipping and handling price you may not feel comfortable bidding on it if you can get it for about the same price at a store nearby once the total cost is added up.  Each online auction goes for a certain number of days, anywhere between one and ten days.  It is a good idea to bid toward the end of the auction so that you will have a better chance of not being outbid.  When participating in an auction be aware of the cost of the item so that you do not overbid for something you want to get a good deal on. 

When selling an item on an online auction site, you will need to determine the price you want to sell your item at, the cost you will charge for shipping and handling and some pictures of the items.  Each site will walk you through how to put your item online for auction.  You will be responsible for coming up with a specific description of the item and uploading any decent pictures you have.  You will also have to figure out how long you want your item to be in the auction, what payment methods you will accept and a return policy.  Selling online is a bit more complicated than buying, because it is up to you to market your items to pull in buyers.  Another hindrance is that you need to take into account the fact that you will most likely be charged a fee to put your item up for auction and a fee when your item is sold.  These fees are based upon the price you start your item for bidding and the price at which it ultimately sells.  These financial concerns should be taken into account when you price your item.
